Writer: Pastor Kim PurlPastor Kim Purl

As the Lenten season approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate a cherished tradition—Fish Fry Fridays. This event not only offers a tasty culinary experience but also fosters community spirit among families, friends, and neighbors. This year, fish fry season runs from March 7th to April 18th, transforming Fridays into a celebration of Lenten food and community connections.

A Fish Fry is a Lenten Thing.

Lent is an important time in the Christian calendar, marking forty days, excluding Sundays, leading up to the celebration of Easter Sunday. This season of fasting and reflection mirrors the biblical account of Jesus's forty days of fasting in the desert before starting his public ministry. His self-restraint serves as an example for Christians who observe Lent through various forms of fasting and penance.

Traditionally, early church practices emphasized strict fasting, allowing minimal meals except on Sundays. However, over time, these rules evolved. Instead of complete fasting, Christians began having one substantial meal each day to sustain their energy for work. Recently, fasting has included denying ourselves the luxuries that we enjoy daily. Another Lenten practice of eating fish on Fridays comes from a tradition of abstaining from meat during Lent, especially on Fridays. Typically, warm-blooded animals are avoided, leading many to enjoy fish—a common choice due to its classification as a cold-blooded alternative. Eating fish on Friday evolves from an observance of the crucifixion of Jesus that took place on a Friday.

No matter the fasting we choose for Lent, its intention is reflection and spiritual deepening; Fish Fry Fridays offer a heartwarming counterbalance, bringing communities together in joy.
